DPEA Seniors unveil new project at MOXI

3/12/2019

On Thursday, March 7th, DPEA seniors Josey Uyesaka, Sammy Moore, Hasset Yishak, Alison Minnich and Ally Mintzer debuted a brand new exhibit at MOXI. The unveiling took place at an Artists' Reception hosted at the Wolf Museum of Innovation + Exploration (MOXI) for DPEA students and their families. This newly added exhibit joins six others currently on display through April 14th at MOXI.

MOXI Director of Exhibits, Sean O'Brien, along with DPEA Founder and Director, Amir Abo-Shaeer,  shared a few words at the Artists' Reception. Please enjoy this brief video put together by DPNews:

The group of 5 senior girls worked for 6 months to design and create the exhibit. Below is a link to a video they made documenting the process, along with obstacles overcome during the experience. drive.google.com/file/d/1riwY-t9fofzzMkKEg9wkGqtX9p8jwmeb/view?usp=sharing

DPEA Showcase Opens at MOXI

1/28/2019

The DPEA Showcase, open now through April 14 at MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation® , is the result of an innovative and creative partnership between DPEA and MOXI. Over the course of the last 18 months, the two like-minded organizations have worked together to formalize a vision to offer students in the DPEA the opportunity to design, manufacture, produce and install interactive exhibits at MOXI. These new exhibits have been installed in the second floor Simms/Mann Family Foundation Bridge gallery space at MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation

MOXI’s director of exhibits, Sean O’Brien, and DPEA’s founder and executive director, Amir Abo-Shaeer have spent significant time collaborating to make this experience as meaningful as possible for DPEA students and MOXI guests alike. O’Brien has invested time with the students in their workshop space at the DPEA campus as well as on the museum floor, helping them to understand the opportunities, challenges and constraints associated with designing and producing exhibits for interactive science museums.

“We place a high priority on real-world experiences in our approach to learning, and in the world of exhibit design, there’s nothing more real world than thousands of visitors engaging with your design, pushing it to its limits. We’re grateful to MOXI for the opportunity this partnership provides our students,” said Abo-Shaeer.

“DPEA is such a trailblazer in their approach to STEAM education, so this partnership is a natural fit. I hope it can serve as a model to our museum peers across the country that teens can pull off some pretty amazing things if you give them the tools, the space and the freedom to try. They bring a unique point of view and fearlessness that we sometimes stifle as we get older or more entrenched in our careers,” said Robin Gose, president and CEO of MOXI. “This partnership is such a meaningful way for MOXI to collaborate with local students to leverage the homegrown talent and innovation in our own community.”

The DPEA Showcase is now open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, April 14 and is included with general admission to MOXI. It is generously funded in part by a gift from Lynda Weinman and Bruce Heavin.

RECENT GRADUATES SHARE INSIGHT AT DPEA BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

10/13/2017

Picture
On Thursday, October 5th, DPEA held a special Back-to-School night for parents of junior and senior students.  Parents had an opportunity to hear from DPEA staff about the upcoming year, as well as hearing some of last year’s seniors speak about their experiences and achievements.  Recent graduates shared insight about how the engineering academy has impacted them over their four years and positioned them for their academic futures.

“We were blown away by learning about all the detailed work that goes into the design and creation of the junior year project, the kinetic sculpture.  We can’t wait to see the finished project. It was also really helpful to hear about what's coming in the senior year, and how to plan for it. Hearing the real-life experiences of the two recent DPEA graduates was also also a high point. We came away from the evening with a much better appreciation of what to expect this junior year in the DPEA!"
  • Judy Fay, parent of junior Tori Fay
“I thought back to school night for Ginger’s grade was really informative and helpful as we plan for her senior year in engineering.”
  • Lisa Vance, parent of junior Ginger Vance
