Current FIRST Robotics Challenge: Breakaway

Two alliances of three teams each compete on a 27' x 54' field, attempting to earn points by collecting soccer balls in their goals. The field is divided into three sections between which robots may move by either going under an 18" tunnel or over a 1' bump. Robots can score additional points at the end of each match by elevating themselves on one of the two towers situated in the centers of the bumps, or by suspending themselves from an elevated robot. Teams gain one point per scored ball, two points per elevated robot, and three points per suspended robot.

Each match begins with a 15 second autonomous period, during which the robot operates based on autonomous code. The match continues with a 2-minute driver-controlled period, when two drivers operate the robot using a team-developed interface.

The two competing alliances are randomly chosen during the preliminary rounds. After the completion of these rounds, on the Saturday of each of the regional competitions, the top eight seeded teams choose alliance partners with whom they compete in the elimination-style final rounds.
