2007 Competitions

In 2007, we attended the Los Angeles regional, and then the San Diego, California regional, which was in its first year.

Los Angeles Competition

Los Angeles Regional 2007Although the robot didn't work properly for our first few matches, we addressed the issues and succeeded in being one of the best 3 robots in the competition. We were the only team who ever beat the eventual winners, and shocked the other teams with a world-class lifting system. We lost in the semi-finals, but most people agreed that (if it weren't for a FIRST Robotics' weird ranking system) we should definitely have been in the finals. In every playoff-alliance, there is an "alliance captain" (the team who carries the other two teams), and we were able to do that both metaphorically and literally.

Our 2007 robot lifting
We made a great showing in San Diego with our lift system, which is arguably the best in the nation, lifting 18 robots, 15" high in 10 qualifying matches, and another 10 robots in the quarter, semi, and finals.

After cruising to an easy win in the quarter finals, we almost lost one of our matches in the semi-finals due to a bad call by the referee. However, realizing their misinterpretation of the rules, the judges overturned the decision, and the DPEA continued undefeated through the semi-finals. Not only did we, the initially-seeded 6th place alliance, beat the 2nd place alliance in the semi's, we also eliminated Team 968, which had made it to the World Championship finals the year before (2006). In the finals, against the infamous Beach Bots (330), we won the first two-out-of-three match, putting us one win away from winning the regional. In the last match, our team was only 1-2 seconds away from scoring enough bonus points to win the match. However, we lost the match, and our opponents, the first seed alliance, won final two rounds and took the gold. At the same time, the Beach Bots (330), who were the only team to ever beat us in the elimination rounds at both LA and San Diego, won their Division (Curie) at the Championship and made the Final Four in Atlanta. We were the only alliance to beat them in the regionals, which we did twice, once in Los Angeles, and a second time in San Diego.
