Overview of FIRST

FIRST, For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology, is a non-profit charity organization founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen, inventor of the popular Segway Human Transporter, with the vision of creating “a world where science and technology are celebrated…where young people dream of becoming science and technology heroes.” The organization designs novel challenges for youth that not only build their knowledge and interest in science and technology, but also instill in them confidence and vital leadership and life skills.

In providing stimulating experiences for young people, FIRST hopes to encourage them to pursue educational and career opportunities in the fields of math, science, engineering, and technology. During the challenges, FIRST encourages an ambiance of “gracious professionalism” amongst competitors, emphasizing exceptional-quality work together with respect for other individuals and the community. This ethos is evident at any FIRST event.

Currently, FIRST offers the Junior LEGO League for 6 to 9 year-olds, the LEGO League for 9 to 14 year-olds, and the Tech Challenge and Robotics Competition for high school students. The senior class of the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy takes part in the latter every year.
