| AP Computer Science: Grade 11/12
This is a standard Advanced Placement course which meets strict curriculum guidelines established by the College Board. AP Computer Science is rarely offered in high schools due to the highly specialized curriculum and the difficulty in finding qualified teachers. This course is offered at Dos Pueblos for the sole purpose of supporting the educational goals of the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy (DPEA), providing a solid understanding of computer programming for students who are considering pursuing engineering or science in college. Students who are interested in computer science are strongly encouraged to take this course during their junior year because it will provide them with the prerequisite skills to help them write the programs necessary for Engineering 2. This enables them to have two years of programming experience prior to entering college, a clear advantage over students with limited programming experience. AP computer science uses JAVA for its programming language. For a more detailed description of the content of this course you can visit the College Board website.
Approximately six weeks of regular instruction time remain after Advanced Placement tests are administered in early May. During these six weeks, students in AP computer science will enhance their programming skills by programming robots and robot controllers in preparation for Engineering 2 and the FIRST Robotics Competition. This course is a college preparatory elective which meets the “g” requirement for the University of California. This course also qualifies for a weighted grade.
