2015: Carousel of Physics

During the 2014-2015 year, the Dos Pueblos Engineering Academy created the Mechatronics Capstone Project with the "Carousel of Physics", a large kinetic sculpture containing over 60 dynamic mechanisms. The Carousel functions as a rotating art installation that demonstrates many important concepts in physics.

This project, created by seniors in the DPEA, sits squarely at the crossroads of art and science. The Carousel of Physics is designed to communicate a sampling of scientific principles in a visually compelling way.

Small groups of students (with the help of teachers and engineering mentors) designed, constructed, and tested wedge-shaped sectors dedicated to demonstrating a specific subtopic in physics. Steel balls guide the viewer through the 15 sectors exploring heat, electricity, fluid mechanics and more! Each sector is activated when a marble is deposited by the central core module into the top of the sector.

The DPEA Class of 2015 presented their Mechatronics installation at the 2015 Bay Area Maker Faire, where it won 3 Editor's Choice Awards and 1 Best of Class Award.

The following videos show more of the carousel.

At the Bay Area Maker Faire, the students and Mr. Shaeer were interviewed by the Maker Faire Live Stream channel in both the morning for about 10 minutes and in the afternoon for over an hour. The students explained each of the sectors of the Carousel of Physics. You can watch the videos by following the links above.
